History & Lit: Rotation 3 (Grades 9-12)

Alveary 2026-27
(Digital copy)

Dive into the 1800–1900s and 100BC-350 AD (Alveary History Rotation 3) through primary sources, creative nonfiction, biographies, and history spines in these Charlotte Mason history courses for high schoolers. Three strands of history run each week: U.S. or Canadian History traces American history through primary source documents, images, atlases, and map work, with ongoing History Chart and Book of Centuries work throughout. World History explores the growing interconnectedness of the 19th-century world, and Grade 9 also includes A Little Book for New Historians, a formative read on what it means to grow historical thinking skills and engage history as a Christian that is recommended for any high school student new to Alveary. Ancient History draws on material culture and primary sources to explore 100 BC–350 AD. Literature engages students in 19th-century novels, short stories, narratives, and fairy tales while building genre and literary analysis skills. History of Literature (Grades 9–12) traces literary movements and figures of the time period, and Shakespeare lessons include Henry IV Part 2, A Winter's Tale, and The Tempest. Poetry lessons feature a variety of 19th-century poems and poets as well as Virgil's Aeneid and Grades 9-11 also work through Poetry Study lessons on reading, writing, and analyzing verse. *Since history is the "pivot of the curriculum" in a Charlotte Mason education, many subjects increasingly coordinate with the historical time period, including church history (in Bible), picture study, composer study, handicrafts, and geography, and pair naturally with these lessons to enrich your study of the time.

The multi-authored Charlotte Mason Centenary Monograph series is designed to highlight and explore the continuing educational and leadership relevance of Charlotte Mason (1842–1923) through the collective contributions of the Armitt Museum and Library, the University of Cumbria, the Charlotte Mason Institute, and other scholars and practitioners worldwide.
