Plutarch & First Citizen Stories

Plutarch & First Citizen Stories

Alveary 2026-27
(Digital copy)

$ 29.00 USD

Begin to learn the nature of citizenship with simple stories from the history of Rome. Then bring one of history's most enduring texts, Plutarch's Lives into your Charlotte Mason lessons. A collection of biographies written 2,000 years ago that shaped the thinking of Montaigne, Bacon, and Shakespeare, Plutarch's stories are a challenging but irreplaceable tool for helping students evaluate the characteristics that define a good citizen. Lesson plans include additional support beyond the Anne White guides to make these rich texts accessible. Students new to Plutarch start with the Beginner Track, a gentle two-term introduction covering the life of Publicola. For best results, students should have some familiarity with Roman history through Beesly's Stories From the History of Rome and at least one year of Shakespeare before beginning and then can move onto other courses covering various lives.

The multi-authored Charlotte Mason Centenary Monograph series is designed to highlight and explore the continuing educational and leadership relevance of Charlotte Mason (1842–1923) through the collective contributions of the Armitt Museum and Library, the University of Cumbria, the Charlotte Mason Institute, and other scholars and practitioners worldwide.
