Finishing the Homeschool Year Strong
By Sarah Stabenow
I’m writing this during our final week of co-op. Backpacks are half-zipped, final projects are being finished, and recitations are echoing through the house while everything else keeps moving forward.
This year has asked more of our schedule than I expected.
We joined a co-op for the first time in years. New friendships, shared learning, and a rhythm outside our home have all been good gifts. But it has also meant holding two structures at once: a 36-week Alveary year, shaped into three terms, laid over a 28-week co-op split into semesters. A few of us are Alveary members and use lesson plans within co-op classes, which adds another layer. It has worked, but not without effort.
We will wrap up our homeschool year in the second week of June. With co-op ending and local schools holding graduations and end of year parties, the pull to wind things down is real. But I want to finish with intention.
Lately I’ve been sitting with a prompt from the Reflective Practice Plan Book (Term 3, Week 10): reassess where you are, adjust what needs adjusting, and remember that it is better to leave a term’s work unfinished than to rush and crowd it all in. It gives permission to be honest about what is actually possible.
So I’ve taken a careful look at each subject.
With co-op ending, we are deciding what remains from lessons that were shifted or missed, and I am adjusting our lesson plans in Syllabird accordingly. Some things will be completed. Some will be set aside on purpose.
We are continuing our family subjects and read-alouds. This is still the center of our days, and I am not willing to rush through it.
Independent work has been reviewed with each of my students. They know what is left, and there is a clear path to the end.
Math continues, as it always does.
And maybe most importantly, we have talked about all of this together. The last day is on the calendar. Exam week is penciled in. We are already thinking about how we will mark the end. Naming the finish line helps bring everything into focus.
If you are feeling the tension of these last weeks, it may help to take an honest look at where you are and revisit your plans. Decide what still needs to be finished well in the time you have left, and move toward that with care.
At the same time, hold onto this: learning has still happened even when everything is not finished perfectly. Growth is not erased by an imperfect ending.
Make notes of where you want to improve and carry those forward as you plan for next year. It is better to finish with clarity than to carry a backlog of stressed, unfinished work into the break.
Share in this post how you plan to finish your year strong. Let’s celebrate with you!
